One episode down, multiple more to go.  I will tell you now that I plan on watching this series all the way through this season even if it kills me!  Though, I doubt it will.

I am going to talk about the show, my impressions of it, and my thoughts on whether it’s really like K-on! or not.  I may be just one other blogger talking about that, but I do think it’s worth mentioning.

Here’s a basic summary of what people said about this show and what I thought about this show (before it aired).  They said things to the effect of, “it’ll be a K-on! ripoff, it’ll be stupid, it sounds just like K-on!”.  I thought, “it looks like K-on!, and maybe it is K-on!with guns, but a little moe never hurt anyone.”  You can see my entire Winter preview here.

Anyway, a quick summary of the first episode: Kanata Sorami, a young soldier with a trumpet, travels to a town, spends some time wandering and participating in a rather odd festival, meets Rio Kazumiya, not in her solider uniform at the time, and basically does nothing for half of the episode.  It’s revealed that she gets lots easily, and she loses Rio’s bell necklace to an owl.  Later, she goes to find it again, and she has to be rescued by the soldiers.  She wakes up at their base, and she trumpets in the morning (poorly) at Rio’s command.

chara_03qeqwWatching this first episode, I was struck with a couple of different thoughts, which I’ll be covering.  First of all,  I like it.  It’s definitely a moe focused show like K-on!, and while the first episode didn’t include a lot of action, I’m not unhappy with it or surprised.  It’s an introduction episode, neh?  I think I would have liked to see more of the other characters, but that’ll come in the next episode, I presume.  I’m most looking forward to meeting Kureha Suminoya, the black twin tailed girl.

I’ll probably make another post about the show in a couple more episodes, once some things happen.

Now, on to some more fun stuff.

Sora no Woto: K-on! with guns?  My verdict is no.  It’s not like K-on! at all, and there aren’t even guns.

chara_01To begin the comparisons, I’ll start with Kanata.  She has a penchant for getting lost, which I can’t say Yui has.  Yui has more of a penchant for getting into any sort of trouble possible.  Kanata is not, as of right now, lazy or dependent on other people.  She’s a nice girl without being a complete airhead (though she is a little airy sometimes).  In addition, Kanata does something stupid by trying to catch, and later following, the owl that steals Rio’s necklace, but she does at least have great care for other people, which I can’t say Yui does.

Basically, if it wasn’t for the artwork, I wouldn’t even try to compare the two.  I do, however, fault this show on its artwork.  For K-on!, it worked well because that show was all about moe anyway, and the artwork complimented that.  While the art in Sora no Woto is not exactly the same as K-on!, it is ridiculously similar, and I don’t think it works as well here.  However, I look at series more for their characters and plotline than I do for their artwork.

Additionally, I left my volume on while watching this episode, which I don’t often do with anime.  I can’t say I disliked it, and I’ll probably continue to listen to the show while I watch it.  It is music based, in a way, I suppose.

To sum it up, I like the show.  I like the characters alright so far, and I will continue watching.  Since this show is one of those sparking debate lately, I recommend everyone give it a chance.  On a normal basis, however, I would probably still recommend it.  The show looks like it may end up being a hidden gem.  And the people already claiming otherwise have started off biased against it, or it’s just not their genre, and they shouldn’t try to kill it for the rest of us.

Sidenote: I had a fun time looking at this anime’s website, if you want to check it out too.  It’s where all my images came from.  [This]

  • Aw, you shouldn’t have compared it so much to K-ON! … I’ll have a watch later, missed it yesterday. ^^ I watched a few episodes of K-ON! and no more, so I probably won’t relate to it via that series in any sense ^^

    • The comparison to K-on! was intended to be a big part of the post. Since it’s a recent topic around blogs and whatnot, I thought I’d get my opinion of it in there as well.

But in my mind, I no longer compare it to K-on!, and I won’t be mentioning it again, I expect.

  • I like the similarities with K-ON, and it’s one of the reasons I enjoyed the first episode. The story was slow, and I wasn’t much interested in it, but the production values looked great. The colors popped, backgrounds were detailed, and the character designs were attractive (although I admit they sometimes look out of place). Even the music was notable.

    • I think the characters would benefit with slightly more interesting outfits, but their designs are pretty cute, indeed. I like Kanata’s hair, but at the same time, I don’t. o.o; I guess I’ll get used to it.

There weren’t any guns, but there was a shiny looking battle tank. You don’t show a tank in the intro like this without hinting at things to come… Still, I am looking forward to future episodes.

    • There was a shiny battle tank, yes. Don’t know how much they’ll actually use that though.

  • A lot of people compared it to “K-ON!” when it was first announced because of the character animation style, which is very similar to “K-ON!” and because they saw it would be about music.

Even though nothing is certain after the first episode don’t think this will even remotely resemble “K-ON!” at all. “So-Ra-No-Wo-To” hasn’t taken a clear direction yet, could be fantasy, sci-fi, slice-of-life… in fact it used more elements as seen in “Macross Zero”, “Aria”, “Kini No Tabi”, “Last Exile”,…

After this first episode all links to “K-ON!” can be cast aside as there’s only a similarity between the character designs.

Speaking of that, many have said that Felicia is a plain copy of Sawako from “K-ON!”, but she’s voiced by Endo Aya who did Miyuki in “Lucky Star”, so I think it’d be even more fair to say Felicia is inspired on Miyuki.

    • Yup, I don’t think it’ll be K-on! related either. I just wanted to get out my thoughts on the matter.
Felicia hasn’t even done anything remotely Sawako related. o.0 I think I’ll like her though, whether she’s inspired by Miyuki, Sawako, or…the maid guy from Kamen no Maid Guy (random).

  • comparing this with K-ON is a very very serious mistake!! It’s like you are trying to link a polar bear with a panda. Bears, but totally different! :D

    But still, everytime I see these girls here, they always remind me of the K-ON girls ^^;

    • But it’s not an error to compare two things that are, as you just said, the same. They’re both bears.
And how can you say that when you’re just saying the same thing I did? :P

  • Anime of the decade, all decades.

  • Yup, good impression so far, but need to see more content to see where it goes.
