I never did like recap episodes, and for the life of me I still cannot figure out why they have them. I am sure even if I followed this series on a weekly basis…wait, that would make me rage even more. Whatever it is, episode 14 was a recap episode, but done in a slightly different way.
What we did learn was that there is a great-grandfather (aka. leader) of the Mist People, and that Nason was the fiance of Soyon before she left to marry Asson. Nason observed both Soyon’s and Erin’s lives from far, and first appeared in the series during Soyon’s trial and death. He continued to observe Erin, hence his ability to re-tell everything to the Great-Grandfather of the Mist People, recapping the series for him and the viewer, in the form of a monologue to inform the leader exactly what happened surrounding both Soyon and Erin.
Erin has hardly changed much in appearance, she just looks more mature and sounds a little bit more so.
It will seem that Soyon was quite a significant member of the Mist People, or that she gained infamy for having married someone other than one of the Mist folk, for even the leader to take note of her. In any case, it is four years since Erin started living with Jone, and Nason continues to observe Erin, as atonement for his inability to save Soyon back then.
What is interesting as well is that the leader mentioned that there was something that was poisonous to the Touda during mating season, and that Soyon knew what it was but never gave it away, living by the code of the Mist People to that effect, resulting in her death. I am interested in this substance that poisoned them, considering that there must be a good reason for Soyon not to give it away. Perhaps the Mist People intend to keep this a secret to avoid the raising of an extraordinarily large army of Touda. In any case, Soyon may not have killed the Touda directly, but she did keep quiet about the cause of their death. My curiosity is aroused more and more, but it hardly looks like the mystery will be resolved soon, since we will touch on both Erin’s and Jone’s pasts next.
PS: Though it was done pretty well, no recap can be as good as the current Bleach filler arc’s (Zanpakutou Rebellion) recaps; there are almost practically none. The scenes from previous episodes are used as flashbacks and for good reason only, to assist in developing the story.
