Senjougahara Hitagi

Since I started doing the 2008 in Retrospect series I have been left high and dry as to how I might actually better rate an anime series rather use an arbitrary and simple way of assigning it a certain score out of ten. Anime series have much to their content and I should encompass all areas of said content by giving attention in terms of scoring to various aspects, with key factors getting more “points” than others. Thus I have decided to come up with a more consistent way of scoring anime series for myself, and I should thus be using this rating system for all anime series I want to rate from now on.

Edit: After contemplating the discussion held in the comments for this post and some further deliberation, the scores’ weightage has been finalized and will be used for future posts dealing with anime awards for a year.

The different areas identified for me in anime that I consider to be important are the following aspects – storyline/plot, animation, music, characters and personal feeling. These can be further broken down in their own categories except the last. All will be explained.

Storyline/Plot

The biggest thing going for an anime series must be its storyline and plot. If an anime series has no organized or consistent plot going for it, it is likely to not hold my interest for long unless it has a few other things going for it in other aspects (such as humor). Since I look for a good story most of the time, the plot is therefore the most significant aspect of an anime series that I want to rate it for. As such, out of a possible hundred points it gets a full 25 in total, making up a quarter of the total summation.

A storyline can be good at the beginning and bad at the end, or vice versa, and it can be broken apart in the middle, or just be really disorganized but still coherent at the end. Thus, getting this large a percentage in the scoring will mean that I have to justify its final rating when the time comes, but quite frankly, I see no problem with it getting the lion’s share (so far) of the deal.

Animation

Animation makes up the next aspect – after all, anime is almost all about the animation whenever you mention it to a layman. However, animation quality can be really good and the show really bad when it comes to a storyline, so despite what people might think, animation hardly takes up a large percentage of the rating. Still, it does hold enough rank to require 15 points for full marks, since good animation helps a lot in making the anime series a lot better, even if it is not perennial to the show’s final success in a very large way (still big enough).

Animation can be split into character drawing, background and foreground differences, and the like. Thus when an anime is rated for its animation quality I still have to take a closer look at the studio’s way of animating the various aspects of scenes.

Music

After some contemplation, only the background music of an anime will be the sole determination of the music sub-category. The OP and ED are already rated differently, and do not contribute anything to the anime most of the time.

Some may think – why have a section dedicated to music? My answer to that would be – without the accompanying music (and sometimes, the sudden lack of said music), will we sometimes be able to set the mood of a certain scene? I find music to play a rather important role as a sort of “sub-aspect”, and thus it is included as a main category with the awarding of 15 points for it.

I originally wanted to place just 5 points for the BGM, but decided that, in lieu of the fact that I do tend to listen to the music more often than not, it gets an additional 2 points to make it a total of 7 in the decision for this area.

Characters

Characters do take up a large percentage of how I feel about a show. If you have a lousy male lead but an awesome female lead, I am sure it changes your perspective on the show as well. The lead and the side characters all play a part in the story, and thus it is only right I also give them recognition, if not by too much, with the points given to this category standing at 15 as well. It may seem that the two categories above and this one all share the same percentage, but it is difficult to split up the points evenly (or to lower or increase each of the section’s) without some form of better justification that allows for good emphasis on all three of them, and hence they all have the same number of points.

In any case, characters will be easy to justify for me, so there really is no issue for me as to why they get 13 points when it comes time to rate them.

Personal Feeling

Finally, no matter how much the others add up, if I do not feel good about an anime series, it will not be good to me. This is the subjective part of the analysis (though all of it might as well be since it is from only my point of view) that is included to account for the personal view of the anime series and stands at 40 points. This extremely large weightage was taken into account after deliberation of the due fact that rating an anime is almost always subjective, no matter how good or bad the other areas might be.

Only the plot has a bigger share of the scoring. Really, no matter what you might analyze or say about an anime, if it does not feel/look good to you, why would you say it is good, from your point-of-view?

Ikaros

So there you have it. As a recap here are the scores:

Storyline/Plot – 25
Animation – 15
Music – 7
Characters – 13
Personal Feeling – 40
Total – 100

This rating system is not meant to be objective. I believe I did mention that. It is to be used as a rating system to replace the old one (which I just used some score upon 10 and tried to justify it) in giving out awards at the end of a year when it came to anime series. I felt the old system needed a remake in detail because it would then give me some justification (and result) when it came high time to say why such-and-such an anime series made me feel good.

Thus, the personal feeling part comes in conjunction with all the other scores. Some good points were raised in the comments so far and yes I will address them one by one after this, but I felt that people thought this was going to be a completely “objective” look that was used to justify how I felt about an anime series, not the other way round. The scores do not justify my feelings; my feelings justify the scores. In a sense, the scores could be left out, but I just felt I needed the score for awarding an anime to be in the various good/bad categories when it came down to it.

By the way, all the pictures of the female characters in this post are from the year’s anime series. I do not have to identify each one for you now, do I?

  • While I don’t subscribe to a scoring system myself, I think that Personal Feeling should be the biggest part of the score. It can trump any of the other things that you normally care about.

    • Yeah, that was the first thought that came to mind. Plus, all of the weights incorporate some degree of personal feeling anyway, so I’m not sure it’s very useful as a weight.

  • I generally avoid reading any review that has scores. It’s silly and doesn’t add anything.

  • Personally feeling is probably 100% of the equation, since when it comes down to it, any rating of most art forms is a reflection of the reviewer’s personal tastes. I know, I’m not helping at all lol.

  • I think that your personal feeling should take up atleast 40% of your final rating after all it has to comepete against several objective points.

You do have 80 Points for the Objective Part but only 20 for your own personal enjoyment.Since this play a rather large part in your overall enjoyment of the series id give it more weight by adding more points to it.

I also have doubts about your music rating.A Catchy OP and ED may be a nice addition to an Anime but the musical score is of much more importance.A Shitty OP and ED isnt that bad but an awful score? Give the score more importance over OP/ED

  • Those are indeed all the main factors of an anime. I agree with previous comments about how Personal Feeling should be weighted more.

Personally, I find it difficult to assign a numeric score to an anime series. It just simply boils down to whether I like it or not. Meh.

  • You need to be specific on the Music category though: Are you rating the OPs and EDs, the BGM, or the overall soundtrack of the show?

  • Alright it seems many people are making some serious mistake about why I am using this rating system. I guess I have to explain it here first before anyone else misunderstands.

Now then, to answer your comments individually.

Super Rats, RP, Jura: See the above.

Super Rats, RP, TJ, Blowfish: I do agree that personal feelings should make up more of the equation, which is a good point. However, some of the “objective” stuff, as RP mentioned, also incorporate subjective stuff. This is why I said the scores do not justify how I feel about the anime but rather the other way round; I intend to fully justify why I gave the anime such a score when it comes time. The score is the end, not the means, to rate an anime.

Blowfish, Reltair, Shance: Well yes, in essence, OP/ED does not have anything much to do with an anime series. Both could be good and the music score bad. I am still contemplating on if I should take out OP/ED, sicne they are generally rated otherwise anyway, whereas I do not usually listen to OSTs unless I take lots of time out, so I will likely remove the OP/ED portion, and lower the music’s score on the overall rating to just fit it for the BGM.

  • Although I only rate animes in my anime list, for me the most important (I should say almost 100%) is personal feeling. In the past I tried to be, how to say, more like one of those critics who will analyze and break down everything, but I’ve decided to rather let my feelings decide. That way, I’m not forced to assign more value to an anime that may have a very deep story but which may bore me to death, or I can give a higher rating to a show that may be shallow or have a subpair animation, but on the other hand be very entertainig.

Also, I assume that if a plot or the animation are good, my feeling about the anime will be higher, so that way in some way or another those more, how to say, objective parameters are included while not tying me down to rate something higher than I actually enjoyed it

But seriously, well I study literature because I’m made to, but I’ve started caring only about how much I enjoy something. If I enjoy an anime, or book, I don’t care about anything else, about philosophy or objective things or literary criticism or wahtever. I just want to enjoy stuff.

  • Personal Feelings – 90%
    Everything else – 10%

    Total – 100%

  • So are you going to rate animes when they finish now, or doing it episode by episode like before?

I think animation and story should get a higher score because they are essentially the backbone of the anime.

Seeing as most of the newer series’ are just copycats, you should rate them on the story’s originality or style. That could fall under a sub-score for story, I guess.

But then, how you rate it is really up to you since it is your personal opinion. But if it was up to me, most of the recent animes would fail based on story alone.

  • Rawr

You might want to increase the score for character as that might be more important than story itself in some cases. Although, that opinion may be subject to my own personal biases, I find that an anime can have a great plot, but characters which I don’t really care for. Vice versa, shit plot, but great character interaction I can find enjoyable.

    • haha, agree with you :D Actually all this different aspects are interlinked. One cannot live without another. So, its abit hard to weight em no? ^^;

I think rating with points is okay since this is your very own opinion. Like when people see you rate this anime like 80/100, they will think it is good and might watch it because of you. Although I think it has the same effect as a 4/5 star rating system. But it just more like.. specified?

Anyway, is the seiyuu part of the rating? :D
andra´s last blog…AFA ‘09 Cosplay My ComLuv Profile

  • Sergio, PP: Yes enjoyment is almost 100% of the equation but since I also derive enjoyment from the various parts and how they interconnect it is only right that I go further in-depth.

Tommy: I always only rate them at the end-of-year, I thought I mentioned this. Never have I done it episode by episode. As for copycats, there are some that can do it better than the original, and originality was never in my consideration because I believe every story has a little bit of originality. It is essentially not something I really pick up on or want to.

Rawr, Andra: Well character-wise I might raise it a little more, since music is almost certain to be taken down in rating. But I hardly believe that the characters are that much of an impact on the plot/enjoyment of the anime, unless the anime is almost specifically character-driven, which occurs in few anime series. Seiyuu are also not part of the rating, they are in a different category on their own.
