Princess Lover

Hot on the trails of the summer anime season for me, that is to say, just a measly five series, comes the eroge to anime adaptation, Princess Lover. Unfortunately prior to this I had no knowledge about the eroge so I have no idea how the story goes, but the artwork in the eroge available was probably still superior to the animation. Still, there is quite a bit to praise, at least for me, because a harem series never seems to work out very well. Asu no Yoichi!, which aired earlier in winter, was a surprise relative to the common, and I am hoping Princess Lover also continues to be one.

Teppei & his Father

How a father greets his son in the morning – boken clash.

Teppei Family

No matter how strong either is, neither are a match for the mother as usual. Speaking of which, the boob physics in this scene surprised me from the outset. You usually do not see it done on side characters to such an extent. This mother is a great MILF though.

Arima Teppei

Meet Arima Teppei, our protagonist. His last name is actually not Arima, but we will come to that later. He is also not as weak as most male leads either, like Yoichi before him. tsuiteru thinks he looks like Treize from Allison & Lillia; I think the resemblance is very weak though.

Teppei's Parents

Just to show how hot the mother is.

Teppei's Parents

The episode starts out with Teppei living his usual daily life, though reports of roadsters attacking and robbing cars are being broadcasted, and Teppei shrugs them off as simple criminal acts for money. However, both his parents seem to think more of it, and his father asks him about a what-if scenario, that is, if Teppei fell into the same situation, and Teppei replies with a casual “I’ll think of something!” The last shot above is the last time Teppei sees his parents alive.

OP

Charlotte HazelinkMaidCharlotte HazelinkThe 4 Princesses

I know most of you know my favorite color is blue but in this shot I am going for the pink girl, peeps. Pink on a girl is hot…so is blue too, but Saber lookalike does not do it for me.

Princess Lover

The opening animation is pretty usual – it shows the 4 main girls and other side characters throughout the anime series. Teppei is also shown dancing with all four of them in their gowns or costumes, depending on the situation. Each of their dances also reflect the girls’ characters I should think, since Saber lookalike’s was more energetic, and you will see this as well later.

The OP song itself is “Princess Primp!” by Hashimoto Miyuki. First thing I got to talk about is the name. Is it an obvious attempt to cover up the word “pimp”? Or an Engrish adaptation of some other word? WTF? Anyway, as with all Hashimoto Miyuki harem song works, this one was pretty average, nothing fancy. I would pick it up of course, but as of now it does not stand out in any way at all.

As a fellow rider allow me to tell you all that this is almost next to impossible in real life with zero training, and Teppei just flips to avoid attacks by both of them and jumps onto the handlebars and controls them at a speed of maybe 60 km/h for a few seconds? Wait, what? Kids, please do not try this at home.

After looking at just the OP animation, I guess that these are the biggest ones among the four girls. And they jiggle. Yes.

I raged so hard. I just could not believe Teppei’s luck with her the entire time.

Summary

Teppei visits his parents’ grave two years after their fatal accident, making up his mind to go over to Isshin-san’s place, whose identitiy remains unknown as this point. As the graveyard is on a hill overlooking a road up the hill, he hears sounds of a horse carriage moving by and looks upon a fair maiden, and behind the horse carriage is a group of roadsters that are chasing it. He remembers the words of the newscaster from the past, and decides to chase after the roadsters on his motorcycle.

The gang smashes up one side of the carriage, but before they can do further harm Teppei moves up on the other side, assures the girl he will do something, and falls back behind the carriage. The roadsters strike at him as he gets close, but he evades the first by falling backwards awkwardly, then dodges the second by doing a backflip on the seat and ends up on the handlebars. He jumps off them onto the first roadster but is punched by him, then held by the second. The girl notices this and asks her butler to help him, and he slows the carriage down and hits the car with the rear right wheel spoke. This angers the first roadster so much he pulls out a gun and shoots into the carriage.

Teppei gets angrier and knees the guy holding him in the face, but is stopped by the gun when the butler decides he could not take anymore of the nonsense and jumps over the carriage’s top and lands on the roadster with the gun, knocking him out. The roadster that held Teppei punches him aside, flips out a knife and attacks the butler, whose name is Alfred. Meanwhile, the rear wheel spoke grows loose thanks to the collision, and the girl is left hanging for dear life. Teppei clears his eyes, sees her in danger and jumps straight from the car to the carriage top, catching hold of an ornament at the top and then saving the girl from a fall into the depths. However the carriage sort of breaks apart, he loses his hold, and they are both thrown into the air in a loving moment. Teppei then draws her close as they fall through the trees below.

The car stops, and the remaining roadster, the driver, pulls out a gun when Alfred sits in the seat beside him. Yet Alfred says he has no reason for living anymore as he had failed to protect his mistress, and the roadster gladly accedes and decides to send him to hell. However Alfred snaps the handgun into two easily with one hand and mentions that it still does not wash the roadster of his sins and punishes him.

Teppei lands safely thanks to the tree canopy which acted as a cushion, but as he gets up he lands his hand on nowhere else but the girl’s left boob, and he leaves it there for a short while. (RAGE) The girl awakens and he hurriedly pulls his hand back and stands up. The girl then feigns amnesia, but quickly laughs it off and mentions her name as Charlotte Hazelink. Teppei thinks it is like a princess’ name, and she said it indeed is. He thinks she is joking again, however.

She holds out her hand, and Teppei takes some time to catch on before helping her up, saying that he was not familiar to such situations, to which Charlotte replies that touching a woman’s breasts while she was sleeping was also not familiar to him, instantly owning him, and leaving him in such a panic that he trips and falls.

Charlotte looks closer at him and decides he is not a bad guy after all, since he did save her. She then also asks him if guys do like bigger breasts, and he of course grows all embarrassed about it. They walk up to the road and get his bike back, and Alfred picks up Charlotte in a car. However, she gives him a kiss on the cheek before leaving. Teppei then receives notes that he had missed many messages while saving Charlotte, and he rushes off on his bike.

Second Half

Teppei & Guards

Suspicious person is suspicious. And the way they arrived so speedily at the conclusion that what he was carrying was a katana was just lulz.

Arima Isshin

When this person first appeared, his voice instantly struck me. You will hear about this later. Anyway this guy is Arima Isshin, who is not just very rich but also very influential.

Guards & Teppei

And when the guard heard Teppei was Isshin’s dear guest, he actually fainted. Talk about power. Sasuga ni Emperor Britannia/Dai Rokuten Maou.

Arima's Social Party

Talk about spotlights even in dinner parties like this. The rich sure can afford it.

Arima Teppei

Congratulations! This is the right face to display when you are announced as the successor to a great corporation!

Arima Teppei

Of course, it also comes with the socializing…

Vincent & Teppei

Does he have to lean in so close? In any case, this guy got rid of the irritating socializing buggers, and with quite some fear in them too I might add.

Vincent van Hossen

He actually looks better like that. Meet Vincent van Hossen.

Maria van Hossen

A loli in a show full of womanly boobs? NO WAI Shin would hate the entire anime except for this girl. This is Vincent’s second daughter Maria by the way.

Arima Teppei

And remember adults – too much socializing is bad for health, like how Teppei got overwhelmed here after van Hossen left.

Fujikura Yuu

This maid is one of the four main girls as we can see from the OP animation, but being looked over like that by Teppei just because she is a maid makes her embarrassed. How nice for a lovely moment for the maid fetish. Through listening to her voice, I have managed to identify her name, despite them never mentioning it, as Fujikura Yuu.

Sylvia van Hossen

Meet Saber, she is from the Fate/stay night series. Oh wait, what?

Teppei & Sylvia

So first off, I understand if Teppei is overwhelmed by the stupidity of the social function, and wants to let out some gas by crossing blades with someone who has a true blade, but WTF? She attacks him just on seeing him have a boken? And the boken can take on a real rapier without breaking up? LOLWUT? What is his boken made of, brass?

Teppei & Sylvia

I do not recall that there was such a person on the left in the FSN show…then again, I never watched it.

Sylvia van Hossen

Bombshell! For all you Saber fans out there. Wait, what? Anyway, her true name is Sylvia van Hossen, the first daughter of Vincent whom we saw earlier.

Summary

Teppei is stopped at the grand lobby because he looks too shabby and suspicious by a couple of guards, and they stop him from moving further in, suspecting him as well of carrying a katana. However Isshin appears and stops the commotion, ordering the guards to treat him as a distinguished guest. This scares one of them so much that he literally faints, and Teppei is summoned to Isshin’s side.

It turns out Isshin is actually Teppei’s maternal grandfather (his mother’s father), and that he had been summoned here because he had heard from Isshin that his parents’ deaths were not an accident. Isshin brings Teppei further in, and asks him what he will do when he finds the ones responsible, and Teppei of course replies that he would crush them. Isshin then asks him for what purpose, to start a neverending cycle of vengeance? The maid then asks Teppei to change his attire, to which Isshin also inquires as to the cause of his dirty appearance. Teppei replies that he had saved someone on the way here, and Isshin laughs hard and asks him to just go out into the function as he is, despite his shabby look.

Isshin stands in the spotlight and holds everyone’s attention as he introduces Teppei as his son instead and also surprises everyone by announcing Teppei to be the successor to the Arima Group (or whatever his corporation is called). He also explains his disheveled appearance and stops to ask for the name of the person Teppei had saved. When Teppei replies that it is Charlotte, everyone instantly goes “oooh!” and Isshin puts his arm around Teppei again. It turns out Hazelink is indeed a large corporation and that Charlotte is indeed a princess.

With his clothes changed to more formal attire, Teppei then asks Isshin why he had done that, naming him as the successor when all he came to do was to avenge his parents. Isshin then replies that it is a tool, a way to allow him to get close to those who had murdered his parents, and he had to play the role in order to find out who it was. However socializing is a little too much for town-based Teppei, but the disgusting crowd is quickly dispersed by a formal man who mentions that they had nothing better to do than try to get into Isshin’s good books by befriending Teppei.

The man then introduces himself as Vincent van Hossen. He also introduces Teppei to his second daughter, Maria, whilst his elder daughter is nowhere to be found. He then leaves with Maria to find her, and instantly, Teppei is overwhelmed once again. Later he falls back into the sofa in the private lounge, and is handed a glass of water by the maid. He mentions how she had been kind since earlier, and she replies that it is only her job as the maid. He then realizes that she really is a maid, and looks her over, causing her embarrassment. However his eye catches something glimmering in the distance and he rushes to the window to see a girl holding out a sword. He runs and grabs his boken, with the maid hurriedly asking him where he was headed. He replies that whenever confused, some action would rouse the soul, leaving the maid confused herself.

The girl is then shown with the sword, which is a rapier (read up on the differences please), and her practice session makes Teppei applaud. She sees his boken however, and instantly strikes at him. They then go into a small fighting match, with both evenly matched and only stopped by the appearance of Isshin, Vincent and Maria.

Vincent mentions that they indeed get along well, to which Isshin agrees, and asks Teppei to back down. Upon hearing his name, the girl gets flustered and takes a better look at him, before looking away again. Maria mentions that Teppei (she calls him onii-chan) is as strong as her sister, to which Vincent replies that it is too early to call him that. Isshin then drops the bombshell on Teppei even as the girl draws up herself to look at him squarely – she is his fiancee, Sylvia van Hossen.

ED

Fujikura YuuSylvia van HossenHoujouin SeikaCharlotte HazelinkED AnimationED Animation

The ED uses still images of the four main girls, and the only good part about it is how each is then transformed to a bikini version at the end in the same poses. I must say, Sylvia is also attractive in this one, though Charlotte still wins hands down, for me anyway.

The song is S.S.D. by yozuca*, and this time round yozuca* hardly strikes me as good. The ED is nothing special as well.

Impressions

First of all I must say the animation exceeded my usual expectations for such a type of series. The drawing tried to follow the eroge (that is what I am led to believe anyway) so it looks more…refined? Certainly seems so to me. The animation quality is there, not very good, but good enough. The music is more of a refined type as well, fitting for the high class world, but nothing fancy at the same time. Again, for me, it speaks of a tone that says “above average”.

The first episode certainly left a good impression – Teppei is not strong or weak, but a balance of sorts. He is out to find revenge, but in order to do so, he must get into the high class world and pass off as the successor to his grandfather (now his father in pretense) and the great corporation he wields. He must also however, enroll into a school for such elites, and this is where the fun begins for the harem. Next episode will show the remaining main girl. By the way I know neither the schoolgirl’s or the maid’s names, so anyone who has played the eroge and does know, enlighten me, thanks.

Plot-wise that surprised me a little, about the revenge. Still, it is not out of the ordinary I suppose. I just RAGE at the luck Teppei had with Charlotte the entire first half though.

Character-wise, the four girls seem to cater to various fetishes…as usual. Charlotte represents both the ojou-sama/hime type, though with more innocence (growing up in a protected environment and all that, evidenced by her question posed to Teppei about boob size). Sylvia, though not apparent at this point, seems to be tsundere, Fujikura (other than the obvious maid fetish) caters to the submissive category, and one wonders what the schoolgirl (other than the obvious schoolgirl fetish) caters to. I am sure that will be answered by episode 2.

Plus, tsuiteru is rather right – the 4 characters can be compared to characters from visual novels and eroge, such as the obvious Saber ripoff, and Charlotte looking like Akashiya Moka from Rosario+Vampire, as well as the schoolgirl looking like Natsume Rin from Little Busters!. So yeah, eroge compilation 101 indeed. Also, tflops called it Booblover…pretty accurate.

Cast-wise, we have two strong male voices assisting in the show. Wakamoto Norio voices Arima Isshin, an instant delight. It is indeed gratifying to hear him thunder like when he made the guards free Teppei, or when he stopped the fight between Teppei and Sylvia. Koyasu Takehito stars as Vincent, another strong voice to carry the day, though quite different from his role in Needless, as I mentioned.

Some new voices are obviously given chances in this show – Terashima Takuma has few other roles that I can even recognize, he plays Teppei in this one. Female voices are kind of split for me – I only recognize half of them. I start with Charlotte, who is voiced by Yuzuki Ryouka. I first thought it was Satou Rina when I heard her voice, they sounded so alike. Yuzuki Ryouka has done few other notable roles for me, the most recent being Cattleya of Queen’s Blade and a previous role being Chau Yan Li in Kishin Taisen Gigantic Formula.

Toyoguchi Megumi, it seems, is making me take note more and more of her. That should only be right – Toyoguchi is no stranger to the seiyuu field. She stars as Sylvia in this one. I managed to find out the names of the main characters – Katou Emiri (Blair in Soul Eater) is Houjouin Seika, the schoolgirl, and Matsuoka Yuki (Inoue Orihime in Bleach) is the maid, Fujikura Yuu. Like I said, new seiyuu are being given a chance, so I hardly know any of the rest. There seems to be one or more of these shows each season, which I suppose is a good thing – you never know when you find budding talent till you give them a chance.

And I was wondering why Alfred sounded vaguely familiar – Akimoto Yousuke also was in Terra e, as Zel.

Charlotte Hazelink

I simply cannot leave the episode without another good look at Charlotte. Ah, you beat Sylvia in terms of beauty, and holding a cat at that, o-hime-sama.

All in all, Princess Lover leaves me with a good feeling and the will to continue this as the harem series of the season. No doubt, it will be filled with much fanservice, but frankly, I never expected much out of such shows, so this is enough for me to want to finish watching it.

  • Wow, this show fails already.

  • rapier

Umm a boken vs a rapier, boken is actually more durable. Rapier being a thin piece of metal witha pointy end. Rapiers are not supposed to slash like say a saber. Rapier is a piercing weapon such that only the last 4 inches are sharp. Also her sword is not a rapier, since it appears to have a single edge. Its closer to spanish weapons that’s like a straight saber.

    • Shin: PWNED

rapier: Yeah but she pierces in the same way as a rapier, which is why I made the connection. She was fencing in roughly the same way, then again I hardly know much about fencing so you could be right instead. Whatever it is, it usually is a weapon used in nobility though, so I am not surprised at that, but rather that she chose to instantly attack him with a sword. Boken is made of wood, so I would have thought it would at least cut through the wood. Well, that would be the common sense thought, but guess not.

  • maki0129

LOL at people who don’t know jack about swordplay.

Only complete rookies ever make the mistake of trying to block the sharp end of a sword. Every single form of modern swordplay, whether it be Kendo, fencing, or whatever, teaches you to parry the flat end, otherwise all swords except cleavers, and some heavy broadswords like the ones used by barbarians during roman times would have broken so easily that a warrior would need to carry a hundred to every battle. This is also why during the middle ages, after the hilt, long swords would have a small blunt portion on the blade, which allowed the knights to handle the sword from both the hilt and the blade, allowing them to better control their parries against other swordsmen.

Hence, fighting even the sharpest Katana with a simple bokken is quite possible for someone who’s skilled at kendo. Granted, by the end of the battle, the bokken might be a bit shaved and be in a rough shape, and true, the bokken should not create sparks when clashing with a sword. But still, the sparring animation was well handled, since Teppei’s bokken never clashed with the edge of the blade, on the last clash, it clashes against the bottom of the rapier which is usually dull to make sure the blade doesn’t grind against the scabbard (and yes, that is a rapier, rapiers were used to slash too, and they can actually be quite durable when handled correctly, also the pappenheimer on the hilt pretty much gives it away, plus that sword is way too light to be a sidesword and way too broad to be a spanish small sword).

    So, yeah… lrn 2 swords…

I don’t expect great things from this show, I never do for harems… But there will be a great load of awesome here. The story won’t make much sense, the plot will be superficial, the character interactions will be shallow and stereotyped, yet this anime will be the one with all the fun this season. Not on a Geass proportion, but still, it’ll be good…

  • Elearis

lol. though it pains me to shoot others down i agree that most people get the concept of swordsmanship grossly wrong and attach false claims and ideas to it. rude claims insult the elegance of the art and is painful to bear with.

“This is also why during the middle ages, after the hilt, long swords would have a small blunt portion on the blade, which allowed the knights to handle the sword from both the hilt and the blade, allowing them to better control their parries against other swordsmen.”

you mean half-swording? i’ll add on a little: it was a technique that was used in Harnischfechtens (Harness, or armoured fighting – German), or armoured fighting, when a more acute thrust was required to penetrate plate and in particular at weak points, much like a short spear. Such techniques also allowed the combatant to initiate a grapple, or, in Italian hand-and-a-half (excuse me, but I really am no authority on the Italian art. I thought it would be good to mention), to perform any action from the ‘Twelve Guards’. It also allows for the pommel and crossguards to be better used as weapons themselves – like a hammer/pick – this normally in conjunction with sword-control techniques like ‘winden’ (a movement where the point of the sword transfers from the weak side of a combatant’s sword to his strong side to his opponent’s weak) and the ’shooting at the ox’ (if i’m not wrong), found in more non-harnisch-y bits of fencing treatises.

Though a rapier might look flimsy and would snap at the slightest pressure the truth is it’s a lot sturdier than most people give it credit for. Rapiers, like most European blades, were made of carbon spring steel, which boasted excellent torque/bending tolerance. And, yes, while swordsmanship would teach us to block a blow with the flat of the sword – that’s when receiving a blow from another, steel-bladed weapon. Metal would push metal aside, thus the reason for the swordsmanship observation of avoiding edge-to-edge impacts. In fact, if the very specific (and very, very unlikely) conditions apply, a heavier weapon would ‘push’ a lighter blade out of the way, causing it to over-strain when bending and potentially snap. An example of such a scenario would be like rapier-to-katana, katana-to-bastard, bastard-to-zweihander, zweihander-to-battleaxe, with the former in each pair giving in to ‘push’ and potentially break. According to Wikipedia, rapiers were either fully sharpened, partially sharpened (say, just the tip) or completely ‘un-keen’, like an estoc. I would agree with this for the most part, for European swords were often ‘blunted’ on purpose to prevent the blade from chipping too easily when striking heavy armour, say, plate. Correct me if i’m wrong but Japanese swordsmen did the same. From the fight scene in the anime i’d say hers is a fully-sharpened (except for the strong-side) duel rapier. And those aren’t supposed to be sparks, me thinks they’re wood shavings! Sword-control is also somewhat easier done with the edge than with the flat, IMO nways. I’m speaking from experience, but who gives a damn about my opinion, lol.

And, yes, I guess I’d have to praise her for her intuition, lol. Hope this post is proves and interesting read, and please, correct any factual errors I might have made. Me’s would be grateful!

p.s. don’t challenge a sword-armed swordsman with bokken unless you’re a certified master well-above your opponent’s level, or you have laser-beam eyes which you can use to your advantage and probably wouldn’t need the bokken to begin with :D

p.s.s. and before any of you start, let me just say that swordsmanship is an elegant fighting art. If you just want to smash something go get yourself an axe or mace.

p.s.s.s. How do I change my avatar pic? lol

“Now I understand why she keeps growing on me. Indeed in that shot she looks like Tsukiumi, except a blue version! So I finally comprehend why she was unconsciously reminding me of someone…and stay off my 4th waifu.”

Yeah, too bad she’s most likely gonna lose to Princess Charlotte Hazelrink…

Let us remember the rules of Harem people. “First Girl Wins”. The Maidoh already has no chance, and the other girl… well, they might as well not bother introducing her at all next episode, you just know he’s not gonna end up with her. The only one with a chance against Charlotte is Sylvia, since it she starts up with the arranged marriage advantage, it’s still unlikely that she’ll win but at least there’s a 15% chance. I feel sad for anyone who bothers backing the other two.

  • Elearis

I can see that the harem world is very cruel… lol

Mr.P : Ah, I see. Yes, I was forced out of my shell for dinner. Guess that did the 15 in.

    • maki: Well I like Charlotte more than Silvia anyway, though both are better than the other two who stand no chance rofl. In the game though each follows a different route since you get to choose one of them to be your wives, if I read this right through the game’s CGs.

Elearis: Yes the harem world in anime is cruel.

  • maki0129

“In the game though each follows a different route since you get to choose one of them to be your wives, if I read this right through the game’s CGs.”

I’m aware, I’ve played my share of eroge…

As a matter of fact I’ve played several people’s shares of eroge… About 35 in my short lifespan, most of them only last year.

Geez, how is it that I ever got a girlfriend…

  • Elearis

i’d probably fail to find a gf in a game, too. damn, did you ever get the feeling that you just don’t belong? btw any girl who fancies herself a journeyman of ‘the art’ is my type :D Oh, i’m probably talking to myself again. MOMMY i wanna real UZI

  • Elearis

Panther: Holy thunder. I’ve been fishing through YouTube for more Princess Lover; and i see where you came with the connection of a Saber clone. I mean, are they serious?? Still she ain’t king, lol, though Sylvia probably has ‘more of a personality’ than Saber. But isn’t that why we love the English Jadwiga counterpart? She CHOPS carrots, for crying out loud! [Saber]. What’s not to like about a socially dysfunctional girl/warrior king?

I’ll be honest with you guys the reason why I liked Saber was because she reminded me of who I was many years back. Things have changed [at least,on the surface], but I still wouldn’t give my thumbs up to Charlotte. And I don’t appreciate people chucking her [Saber] under some stereotypical category just because she exhibits certain ’symptoms’. Go ahead stone me see if I care XD

As for the other two I don’t know. I’m pretty sure they’d turn on their share of guys, or does this discussion revolve around the main protagonist and his choice? But they’re not that bad – why would the guy not give ‘em a chance? Sorry I’m very new to this, but it’s always fun to talk about things, no?

  • Elearis

referring to my post above: Only a like-minded sufferer would appreciate and connect with the feelings of the inflicted. Sorry I just had to say it.

  • Merah231

maki0129 Said: “Let us remember the rules of Harem people. “First Girl Wins”.. This is not always true! While yes the majority of Harem animes do follow the “First girl Wins” rule i suggest all of you should watch Shuffle! The eroge is quite decent, and for once the first girl does not win. xD
