I am already a little late with this announcement, but whatever. Impz from T.H.A.T. Anime Blog has already announced the beginning of the Anime Blog Awards ‘09, but with one large difference than the previous and first – you get to first feedback to the committee of ABA as to how to improve it, before they even begin.
You can read the full details of the announcement here, and I would like to take this chance to say that your feedback will be most appreciated…provided it is constructive, that is.
If you recall the last ABA, I had no right to take part, and really, I wrote it off in a comment on Double’s blog as being more of a “popularity vote” than an actual award presentation kind of thing. Impz is taking steps to just prevent that, by having the feedback and criticisms first, but I will still believe the People’s Choice to not be more than anything but a popularity vote, the majority of the time. The Blogger’s Choice too, may end up being a majority vote, but I hope not.
To prevent further bias, Impz, Mellow Bunny and AkaiWolf, the three main people in charge as part of the committee of ABA, will not have their own blogs participate (at least, I know where Impz is concerned, this is definitely true).
I can already see however, that there are people, some old and some new, who will look with askance (an understatement when applied to some, it seems, but I have no confirmation of this at all) upon the whole thing as nothing more than perhaps a variety show. Yet the spirit of ABA remains to get new blogs out to other people for them to know about, and to reward, even if rather intangibly, those who have continued to bring us news, feedback, cultural thoughts, and more on the anime and otaku culture in general.
It remains to be seen if the ABA can pull it off, but we can all start pushing it in the right direction by first leaving our thoughts and constructive feedback. When it begins, all I can ask for is that, when you want to vote, first be sure your vote is objective. I understand this can be difficult, but hey, the few months of voting time is precisely for you to get to know these blogs that were hitherto an anonymity, and thus, let you get to know them more, and make a more objective vote in the end. Make an educated vote, not a biased one.
I already have a list of blogs to nominate for the existing categories, and if new categories are added I will probably have blogs to recommend as well. I suppose this year, I want to see it working better than last, and getting all these new bloggers I have come to know throughout the year, out to other people for them to know about too. Cheers.

The Idea behind it is a good one.Awards will always be popularity contests as long as the masses are allowed to vote. Its hard to be objective and thats the reason why jurys are formed

Haha I guess this time round other than the ones I know I should look at other blogs too, adding to my already goddamn-long list of blogs. :)

True.
Interesting! I’ll keep an eye on this so I can find new great blogs to add to my list to check on periodically! I LOOOVE a good anime/manga/figure blog!

I’m looking forward to the ABA, partially because I’ll actually get to participate this year but mainly because I’m curious about who will win Rookie of the Year (assuming it’s still around). My money’s on ghostlightning, but we have more than a few serious contenders to compete for it.

Ghostlightning? Do you have his blog, I thought he did not have one or maybe I just missed it lol.
@Panther: Ehh, popularity contests are always gonna be popularity contests. But at least, we can see what’s out there. I usually find blogs via repeated mentions or word-of-mouth over time, not usually based on one day.
Ghostlightning’s blog is We Remember Love, at http://ghostlightning.wordpress.com. Check it out some time, I’d recommend it.

I like the option where we get to suggest new categories but I wonder how the new categories will be selected at the end of the day as there are already many suggestions there. Hopefully, there won’t be too many drama this year.
