So yesterday I clicked on the button of doom, otherwise known as “Reserve” (this item). What item might it be? The above picture has the answer!

So, the figure of Shiranui Mai I mentioned earlier is now up for preorder over at Hobby Search. It was obvious from the very start that 15,800 Yen will translate to “something that is very expensive.” However, I just had to post this up, when I saw the actual price.

According to XE.com:

15,010 Yen = 288.791 SGD (*15,010 Yen is the offer price by Hobby Search if you preorder)

The first reaction I had was:

LOLOLOLOLOL

So I decided to include shipping costs, reservedly putting the price at 19,000 Yen. Considering how big and heavy Mai will likely be, 19K Yen is really something conservative as an estimate. XE.com’s answer:

19,000 Yen = 365.5549 SGD

I had almost the same reaction as above. Then I finally saw the exchange rate.

1 SGD = 51.978 Yen (or so, this was accurate at around 1:30 PM yesterday SGT)

WTF? I remember a time when it was 1 SGD = 70 Yen or so. If we base it on that rate:

19,000 Yen = 271.43 SGD

LOLWUT?

Please, President Elect Obama, bring the economy back to something reasonable by March. Thank you.

This also shows you that classic gaming females that have survived more than ten years in the industry and are among the most famous of gaming females do work for their money. Blah.

The “cost” part is affirmed. I just want it to be “way lesser” as opposed to “way more”.

obasan love as usual lol =X

  • The higher prices are definitely stopping me from pre-ordering many figures. I’m still torn over if I should really pay so much for one of the eb’s Ciel figures.

Most likely not. These days I prefer to think clearly on whether I truly want a figure or character before I decide. I canceled four preorders that I could no longer justify, also makes space for the others that I know I really want.

  • Mai is hot. That’s why it’s cost a lot.

Edited: also my avatar somewhat looks better

  • Yep the sinking Dollar is putting a cramp in many a figure collector’s budget. Right now it’s down to 91yen/1 USD here’s hoping it goes back up before my next preorder comes due.

Back when I first got into Anime you could buy import Laser Discs for a penny a yen and the importer was making his profit on the exchange rate.

Blue mary also not bad, why did they left it out?

    • @wongtcsg -

Blue Mary is not as classical or as well-known as Mai for sure. For Mai, even people who are just remotely interested or into just very casual gaming know about her, that is why. She has remained a symbol for more than ten years in the franchise.
