This week’s Song of the Week is an English song I feel lots of peeps might want to sing at some point or other in their lives – just asking what the hell is going on. The lyrics are pretty much self-explanatory.

I toyed with the idea that it could be a feminist song, considering the line “of this brotherhood of man”, but it could just be a general reference as well. Then there is also the “institution” as mentioned in the verse right after the first chorus. The “institution” it refers to here would probably mean an institution that you got into yourself, ie. the creation of your own life or the society you live in might be the institution, the circumstances that you are currently in too, etc. Liberal analogy, as it were.

So of course, if you ever feel like shouting it all out loud, ask the world in one single loud shout, “What’s up?” or “What’s going on?”, and you might just find this song appropriate for expressing your feelings.

I am indebted to Lyrics On Demand for the full lyrics and the correction of the lyrics that were stuck inside my head ever since I obtained the song. I am not merely copying and pasting whatever is there, since I am also adding breaks, stresses and stuff.

So here it is.

What’s Up
4 Non Blondes

25 years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed
Just to get it all out what’s in my head
And I’m, I am feeling, a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I, scream at the top of my lungs “What’s going on?”

And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on
And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on

And I try, oh my God do I try
I try all the time, in this institution
And I pray, oh my God do I pray
I pray every single day, for a revolution

And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed
Just to get it all out what’s in my head
And I’m, I am feeling, a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I, scream at the top of my lungs, “What’s going on?”

And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on
And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on

And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on
And I say, hey yea yea~, hey yea yea yea
I said hey, what’s going on

25 years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

Oh! I haven’t heard that song for ages now! How nostalgic… But yeah there are always times where I want to ask or shout: “What (the hell) is going on?”
