Anime Character Storyline
*Warning: this part contains spoilers!

Yin is first introduced as a “doll” in the story and part of Hei’s team. As a doll, she retains and is unable to feel emotions such as happiness, sadness, and the like. She is also able to observe from far, through the use of her observer apparitions, events that happen around water. So long as she has water near her, and water near what she wants to observe, she can see what is happening.

Observer apparitions are invisible to the normal human eye, but can be seen by other dolls and contractors.

As the story progresses, little is revealed about Yin other than her seeming to have a hint of human feelings despite her emotionless way of speaking. She is well-known for saving Hei out of certain sticky situations, or getting info on the enemies beforehand.

Later on in the story, her background is revealed. Once a Scandinavian called Kirsi, she trained under a now-famous pianist known as Eelis Kastinen. Her mother and her were often left alone while Yin’s father traveled for work, and the pianist was thus close to her mother. When her father died in an airplane crash, the news proved too much for her mother to bear alone, and Kastinen was there to comfort her.

When Yin saw the two of them together, Yin was very upset, and ran out into the night. While chasing her, her mother was run down by a truck trying to save Yin, an accident Yin had always felt was her fault since then.

Kastinen travels in the storyline to look for Yin in Japan, employing the services of the clumsy detective Kurasawa Gai, while at this time another syndicate group has infiltrated the area and wants to eliminate Yin’s team, using her as bait and information. As Huang mentions at the start of this part of the story, Yin has no emotions but she does have “a great memory”. Huang also makes the point home that Yin was “programmed” that way.

One of the contractors on the opposing syndicate has the ability to capture dolls’ observer apparitions and to some extent control dolls. Through the use of the observer apparition, he renders Yin something like a lost soul, and as she travels through the streets the next day, she chances upon a piano being played in a sort of open theater, reviving some of her lost memories regarding her past.

Found by Kiko, Kurasawa’s assistant, she is lured later from Kiko by the contractor of the opposing group. Though she escapes with Hei’s help, Kastinen finds her, and under the assumption that people were chasing her, calls upon Kurasawa to bring them far away and hide them.

While on the train, it rains and Yin is able to discover that the contractors are after her. Getting off with Kastinen they make their way towards an abandoned schoolhouse, with Kurasawa following later. It is here that Yin’s past is fully revealed, and how Yin had always felt guilty about the accident.

Hei gets to them first, but the contractors catch up and attempt to stop them. Hei disposes of one while Huang shoots the other from far. When Huang is about to shoot Yin as well (under the syndicate’s orders), the contractor of observer apparitions loses all of them at once, creating a silver light that Yin basks in as she recalls all her emotions of past. This brings tears to her eyes, and Huang is unable to shoot even though he has always believed dolls to be devoid of all emotion.

When Kastinen attempts to ask Yin once more to return with him, Hei tells her it is her decision, and she stays on as Yin, forsaking the name Kirsi, and becoming Yin totally.

In the final episodes, it is conjectured by a long-time contractor that dolls may be the start of the next stage of evolution, and in the final episode itself, at the end, Yin’s observer apparition is shown as a silhouette of her true self instead of a shapeless small mass as before.

Description

Yin is a quiet girl with an emotionless way of speaking, but the revealing of her past in the storyline draws her closer to many people. Filled with guilt over her mother’s death, it can be implied that she, out of her own free will, ran away from home and somehow became a doll to escape her past.

Later on in the series Yin is showed to have emotions, not just in the background story but also when she saves Hei in the last episode from falling into an abyssal darkness as Amber tries to make him understand exactly what he is. It is also evident that, though she cannot smile anymore, she tries to do so when Hei knocks out Kastinen, after learning from Kiko.

Though described by some as a “loli”, it can be inferred that Yin’s place in the series is impeccable, as it brings home the idea of “dolls” in the story, whilst showing how a doll can still be rather “human” in the normal sense.

Miscellaneous Information
